PRESS RELEASE
The idea of visually mapping Kalymnos will engage two groups of children while they create an exhibition-journey throughout the past and the present of the island.
Departing from Vathy, the area with the most abundant archaeological sites on the island, the two separate groups will participate in workshops, crafting their own creations that will be afterwards presented in a group show.
By enhancing their skills and knowledge on contemporary creativity during the artistic workshops and by dialoguing with the local cus- toms and tradition, the students shall interact with their own homeland. They will have the chance to approach and examine artworks of contemporary artists that will be presented during the ateliers whose core theme evolves around the concept of the archaeological site.
At the last section of this artistic adventure we shall emphasise the multidimensional, educational mission that derives from promoting the arts, through the curating process and organising of an exhibition. The children will be tasked to deploy the information acquired by the programme contributors-artists on exhibition curating and select the works they wish to showcase in the group exhibition and actively participate in organising it. The artistic activities will cover archaeological sites of the island, as well as indoor spaces, encourag- ing the participants to roam around spots where the participants’ works will be displayed.
Our main objective is to approach the relation between contemporary creation and local culture within a community of a relatively isolated area, that will attempt to leave its very own creative mark.
With the support of NEON and the Municipality of Kalymnos.
